As part of a crucial fire safety initiative, Aleron undertook a comprehensive project at Zealand Court care home upgrade its fire protection systems, ensuring the highest level of safety for its residents and staff. The goal was to adhere to stringent passive fire protection standards, addressing the significant challenges posed by the existing structural features, which initially lacked adequate fire resistance.

The Aleron team meticulously installed fire-rated barriers to achieve the necessary 60-minute fire resistance rating. These barriers, constructed using double batt insulation and mastic sealants, were strategically placed throughout the care home to protect critical areas, including resident rooms, communal spaces, and utility areas.

In addressing the various penetrations within the building, the team encountered multiple unsealed penetrations through block walls. Specific penetrations included holes, voids, heads of walls, single cables, cable bunches, plastic pipes, and incorrectly sealed gaps around plasterboard.

To rectify these issues, the team implemented the following measures:

- Installed passive fire protection seals using approved fire-resisting products to fill holes, voids, and gaps at the heads of walls.
- Applied linear gap mastic to properly seal gaps around plasterboard.
- Reinstalled fire seals using approved fire-resisting products, ensuring they met the required fire rating specifications.

Through these actions, Zetland Court significantly enhanced its fire safety measures. The successful completion of this project has provided a safer environment for residents and staff, reinforcing the care home's commitment to safety and well-being. The expertise in passive fire protection has been crucial in fortifying Zetland Court's dedication to providing a secure and protected living space for its community.
